DAYTONA BEACH, Florida -- An outspoken Central Florida police chief is under fire after calling the sheriff in his county a moron.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood, who's known for his colorful comments about criminals and arrestees, last week called Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson a moron at a public meeting on crime trends.

At Thursday night's County Council meeting, Chairman Frank Bruno said he was upset over Chitwood's comment.

"I'm offended by what has happened, and I think the citizens of Volusia County should be offended about the statement that was made about our sheriff," said Bruno, who then addressed Johnson. "I commend you for the way you've handled it, but I believe there should be a public apology."

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Chitwood doesn't deny calling Johnson a moron, but he said he misspoke and intended to say that the sheriff made a "moronic decision" for not backing new county rules Chitwood wants to help fight a growing trend of copper thefts.

Through a spokesman, Johnson said he would not dignify Chitwood's insult with a comment.
