(CBS Charlotte) - In most states in the U.S., buying a gun is like buying a pack of cigarettes - it's incredibly easy as long as the purchaser has a Driver's License.

In fact, in our country, around 40 percent of all gun purchases are made just by the purchaser presenting a valid Driver's License. This often happens at gun shows, where background checks are not required. The Firearm Owners Protection Act, which was passed in 1986, protects a person's right to own a gun.

And yet, several non-lethal things in the U.S. are a lot harder to obtain.

Check out our list of things that are harder to obtain than a gun below:

Fishing

Before you can "go fishing," most states require that you apply for, and obtain a Fishing License. This license typically expires at the end of the year, which means that the license will have to be renewed every year. In most states, you do not need a license to buy/own or shoot a gun.

Driver's License

In order to obtain a Driver's License, a person must take a written test, driving test, and vision test at the DMV. In most states, there are no mandatory tests required before a person can own a gun. Undoubtedly, a required vision test (for obvious reasons,) could come in handy for a gun owner - as would a written and gun demonstration test.

Cell Phone Contract

In need of a new cell phone? Most wireless carriers will not give you a cell phone contract without first providing your Social Security number. A gun purchaser does not need to provide their social security number when buying a gun at a gun show.

New Credit Card

Are you in need of a credit card? Not so fast...most credit card companies request your social security number, and verify your income/job history before they approve you for credit. Guns can be purchased without a social security number at most gun shows in our country, and customers usually walk away with a gun the day they request one.

Marriage License

??"Here comes the bride...??" Before a couple can get married, they must first apply for, and obtain a marriage license. Depending on the state, it can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of weeks to obtain a marriage license. Most gun purchases are immediate, and do not require a license.

French Cheese

Are you a cheese lover? Well, you may be missing out...on French Cheese that is. That's because French Cheeses are banned in our country because they are made with raw milk. The FDA really began cracking down on French Cheese in 2005, thus making it nearly impossible to obtain in the U.S. today. But if you simply can't resist those stinky cheeses, your best bet is to take a "little trip" to France.

Exotic Animal License

Isn't a monkey adorable? Would you like to own an exotic pet? Before an exotic pet can reside with you, most states require that you apply for a license (which will arrive in the mail) and pay a fee.

Contact Lenses

Need new contact lenses? Well, that's not possible without first visiting an Optometrist. In 2003, the Fairness to Contact Lens Consumer Act, was signed into law by George W. Bush. The law prohibits the sale of contact lenses without a prescription. No one is required to visit a Dr. before they can own a gun. However, perhaps they should be. If more mental evaluations were done, perhaps less gun related deaths would occur.

Federal Laws on Sudafed Usage

Federal Laws restrict the amount of over-the-counter Sudafed being purchased within a given month. There are currently no federal laws regulating the amount of guns a person can purchase.

Voter Registration Card

Most states in our country require residents to register to vote 30 days in advance. The voter registration card arrives in the mail after the 30 day period has ended.
