Creve Coeur, MO (KSDK) - The first day of school was traumatic for a  Missouri mother and her grade school daughter. The mom panicked when her 8-year-old didn't get off the school bus.

The Parkway School District superintendent is now calling for swift action.

The bus driver at the center of all this is suspended, but the superintendent said he wants that woman fired.

It was around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Creve Coeur Park when third grader Angel Hale was found walking along a ditch, on the side of the road, backpack on and crying.

She was spotted by a woman headed home from a walk when she pulled her car over to ask the child if she was OK.

The two ended up calling Angel's mother, who had been frantic for the last hour, wondering why Craig Elementary officials didn't know where her child was.

According to Parkway School District officials, an error in paperwork caused Angel to be put on the wrong bus.

Then, when she pointed out her home to the bus driver, the woman wouldn't stop and let her out two stops away, the final stop of the day, allowing the 8-year-old to walk home.

Angel got lost.

"I was scared and I was thinking that I was home when I make it out of the woods," said Angel.

"Someone should've stopped and asked her what was wrong. I could count 20 cars that went by her, that drove by her," said Tina Benson, the woman who stopped.

The district is still investigating the incident.

In the meantime, Angel says she never wants to get on a school bus again.
