PORT RICHEY, Florida (AP) - When Martha Herbenthal was being hauled off to the Pasco County Jail, authorities say she asked 32-year-old Stephanie Edgell to watch her Blue Fronted Amazon Parrot named Buddy.
But the Tampa Bay Times reports the bird was gone when Herbenthal returned home June 24. Edgell told her Buddy "flew out the window."
Herbenthal didn't believe her. Her hunch was right.
Authorities say Buddy was sold to Shady Hills Pet Shop for $225. The pet shop owner even had a note where Edgell had written her name, address and phone number.
Buddy is now safe at home.
And Edgell is in the Pasco County Jail facing charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property. Bail has been set at $12,000. No attorney was listed on jail records.
