HOUSTON - A Houston mom is facing charges after police say she left her baby girl in a parking lot because she didn't want her anymore.

Chanta Johnson, 30, is charged with child abandonment.

According to court documents, Johnson left her 5-month-old daughter in a child carrier in a store parking lot in the 3200 block of Burkett on September 18.

Police interviewed a witness who said she saw Johnson leave the baby in the parking lot. She said she picked the baby up and - since she knew Johnson - went to find the mother.

The witness told police she found Johnson at some nearby basketball courts.

When the witness asked Johnson why she left the girl in the parking lot, she said Johnson told her she "did not care what happened to the baby."

The witness said Johnson also told her she didn't care if the witness called CPS.

Distraught, the witness said she took the baby to her house and called another friend. Together, the women brought the baby back to Johnson a second time, because the child was crying and needed diapers and milk.

But the second witness told police when she approached Johnson at the basketball courts and asked if Johnson was going to come get the baby, Johnson said no, adding "I know you are going to call CPS on me, go ahead."

The witness told police she couldn't believe what she was hearing.

Police later interviewed Johnson's son, who told investigators how his mother had instructed him to put the baby's carrier outside of the car in the parking lot, because she didn't want the baby anymore.

Johnson was booked into the Harris County Jail and her bond was set at $20,000.

According to court documents, she was just released from the Harris County Jail two weeks ago after serving 10 days for a misdemeanor assault.

Both of her children were placed in CPS custody.
