St. Petersburg Officer Eugene Bessette was the ninth officer killed in the line of duty.

St. Petersburg, FL - Monday, January 24, 2011 two St. Petersburg Police officers were shot and killed in the line of duty. That brings the total number of officers killed within the department to 14.

According to the city of St. Petersburg's website, the ninth officer was killed during a traffic accident. On November 19, 1961 Officer Gene A. Bessette was operating his police motorcycle east-bound on Lakeview Avenue South and Twelfth Street. A man driving a car on Twelfth Street ran a stop sign. The officer was thrown 180 feet, killing him instantly.
