Tampa, Florida -- With his two daughters and wife surrounding him, Bob Buckhorn officially announced his candidacy to become Tampa's next mayor. Buckhorn, who was one of the several candidates who lost to Pam Iorio in the 2003 mayoral race, says being mayor is the one place where you can shape a city and take it to the next level.

Buckhorn isn't the only one who wants the job. City Council Chair Tom Scott and former Tampa Police Captain Marion Lewis have filed to run.  Other potential candidates include Hillsborough Commissioner Rose Ferlita, former Mayor Dick Greco and former Congressman Jim Davis.

Buckhorn says it will be a very competitive race. He says he has a lot of friends considering the run who will bring various things to the table. Buckhorn says they will still be his friends after the election.

While the candidates will make all sorts of speeches and make promises over the next several months, the person who may know best what problems the next mayor will face is the current mayor. Pam Iorio says as she sees it the defining issue for the next mayor will be transportation.

Iorio says she views it critical to the city's long term economic viability, mobility and quality of life.  The mayor, who is leading the charge for a one-cent transportation sales tax which is on the November ballot, says if it passes, the new mayor will have to take the leadership role to make sure it is done right.

Iorio says if it doesn't pass, the next mayor will have to take the leadership role and figure out why it didn't pass and what to change so it will pass.

While Buckhorn's online pitch says new challenges need a new leader, in the next 10 months several others in addition to Buckhorn will say they are on track to meet the challenge and be Tampa's new leader.
