Indian Rocks Beach, Florida - The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened Saturday around 4:55 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Indian Rocks Beach bridge.
The bridge was closed in the eastbound direction while detectives investigated the single vehicle crash but it reopened around 9:30 p.m. The bridge is also known as the Walsingham bridge.
According to witnesses 59 year old Robin Meyer of Clearwater lost control of his 2009 Yamaha motorcycle and slammed into a guard rail on the bridge. He was not wearing a helmet.
Meyer continued traveling eastbound and a short distance later collided with the concrete barrier and was thrown from the motorcycle and landed into lanes of traffic. He died at the scene.
Sgt. Glenn Luben of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says this isn't the first motorcycle accident they've responded to on the bridge. "I can tell you this is the second motorcycle crash in the past two years that we've investigated at this exact same spot. Both motorcycles struck the same portion of the guard rail."
He says in the motorcycle crash two years ago two people lost their lives.
According to investigators speed and alcohol appear to be a factor in Meyer's crash.
