Clearwater, Florida -- Congressman-elect David Jolly was sworn in at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
In his speech following the oath, Jolly told his fellow congressmen he wanted them to know two things about him: he believes in the institution of the People's House and he believes in civility.
"We are all elected to fight for our communities, to fight for our constituents. We are elected to fight for our convictions, for the causes we believe in, but it is a fight for the future of our country, it is not a fight against each other -- and I know that."
Jolly defeated Democrat Alex Sink and Libertarian Lucas Overby on Tuesday for the right to replace the late C.W. Bill Young and represent Congressional District 13, which covers most of Pinellas County.
RESULTS: District 13 Special Election
But while the 41-year-old won this week's special election, some political analysts say the November race could produce a different result with a change in voter turnout.
"Historically, you see a different kind of demographic make-up in a regular election; more younger people [and] more minorities, which may be a bigger challenge for Jolly," University of South Florida Prof. of Political Science Dr. Susan MacManus said of the November election.
Plus, she says the turnout could be much different if Charlie Crist -- who is from St. Petersburg -- is on the ballot in the Governor's race along with a medical marijuana initiative.
"Turnout will be very different in November now than it... was yesterday," says MacManus. "But again, I go back to 'If I do my job, November takes care of itself.'"
Given how close the special election was, MacManus says Democrats will surely field another candidate.
Sink has yet to say if she'll run again, but others expected to give it some thought include one-time Congressional candidate Jessica Ehrlich and Pinellas County Commissioners Janet Long and Charlie Justice.
