St. Petersburg, Florida-- Beer snobs in Florida may be in luck. Legislation being debated this session at the state capitol would allow a person to buy 64 fluid ounces of beer in one container, known as a growler.

The purpose of the growlers is for customers to take beer home from a pub, to drink within the next day. Each growler contains about the equivalent of four pints.

Microbreweries in Florida have been lobbying for a change to state law for years, saying it makes no sense why they can sell someone a 32-ounce container or a 128-ounce jug, but not the industry standard-size right in the middle.
Senate bill sponsor Jack Latvala, R- Pinellas County, says Florida is one of only four states where the 64-ounce bottle is illegal.
"It's just hard to explain why 47 other states allow something and we don't. I think that's probably the biggest challenge the opponents of this bill have," said Sen. Latvala. "For the opponents of this bill, it's all about trying to preserve a monopoly or their market share or whatever."
Latvala says Florida's beer laws date back to Prohibition, and even more changes probably need to be made going forward. He adds that in other states, beer tourism is actually becoming popular and Florida is missing out on an economic opportunity.
