St. Petersburg, Florida -- A candidate for a seat in the Florida House of Representatives is under fire over a series of controversial tweets.

Joshua Black is running for Florida House District 68, which covers parts of St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park. The Republican candidate perhaps inadvertently raised his profile to a national level on Monday after retweeting somebody's comment that "I'm past impeachment. It's time to arrest [President Obama] and hang him high." Black added in his retweet that he agreed.

He immediately received scorn online for the remark, including from fellow Republican Chris Latvala, who is running for the House seat in a neighboring district.

"You aren't seriously calling for the killing of Obama are you?" Latvala asked on Twitter. "I know you are crazy but good heavens. U R an embarrassment."

On Tuesday Black did not apologize for his comments, telling 10 News, "I just really want to see justice."

Black explained it's his opinion the President has committed multiple crimes and if he's tried and convicted, Obama should be killed.

"I want to see all elected officials face the standard that everyone else faces. They should not be able to write a law and have us face it and then not have them face it," Black said.

On his Facebook page Black went on to say Obama should be arrested and tried for treason.

"This is the man who droned Al-Awaki [sic] on 'suspicion of terrorism -- not proof -- and later killed his 15-year-old son for nothing more than being his son," Black said on Facebook.

Radical Islamic cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen, was killed by a drone strike in Yemen in 2011. A few weeks later his American-born son was also killed in a CIA-led drone strike.

"Try [Obama] before a jury," Black goes on to say in his Facebook post. "And, upon his sure convictions, execute him. Thus has he done, thus it should be done to him."

Black's possible Democratic opponent, state Rep. Dwight Dudley condemned the comments. "Advocating violence is wrong," he told 10 News, and then added, "Suggesting someone be hanged is a horrible and outrageous response."

Republican Party of Florida Chairman Lenny Curry also called on Black to get out of the District 68 race on Tuesday. In a tweet to 10 News reporter Preston Rudie Curry said, "That garbage does not represent the values of the people I know, whether R, D or I."

Governor Rick Scott agreed with Curry, tweeting on Tuesday afternoon that "Joshua Black's comments on President Barack Obama are outrageous. Floridians expect more from our leaders & he should immediately withdraw his candidacy to represent families of Pinellas County."

But Black told 10 News he's not getting out of the race or leaving the GOP, but he did say he's leaving a liaison position with the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee.
