Video: After lion escape, group wants exotic animals ban

Savannah the mountain lion who got loose from Survival Outreach Sanctuary in Spring Hill was caught shortly after 12:30 and taken back to her enclosure.

Spring Hill, Florida - Following the escape of a lioness from a Spring Hill sanctuary, one group is voicing its opposition to exotic pet possession.

On Friday morning, a seven-year-old lioness named Savannah escaped from its enclosure at the Survival Outreach Sanctuary.

It dug under the fence of its cage and slipped onto the open grounds of the facility.

Several hours later, trappers used a tranquilizer to capture the animal near some trees at the far end of the property.

A U.S.D.A inspection report dated Feb 25th, 2013 shows the sanctuary was warned that a lion was digging around its enclosure and could escape. It was ordered to fix the problem by the end of March, but it's not clear if that ever happened.

"This just points to the fact that what we need in Florida is a complete ban on the breeding the sale and the private possession of potentially dangerous exotic animals," Don Anthony with the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida.

The group said that exotic animals rescues do not have the necessary skills to take care of the animals, which is putting the surrounding communities were they are located at risk.

"Hopefully maybe in the next year we can get a senator and a representative in the State of Florida to go along with this and put a ban into effect," he said.

As for the Friday incident, Survival Outreach Sanctuary was cited for improper caging and faces a $500 fine and-or up to 60 days in jail.
