Tampa, FL - According to Target, about 40 million credit and debit card accounts may have been compromised by a data breach.

The chain said on Thursday that the accounts may have been impacted between Nov. 27th and Dec. 15th.

People who frequent Target were shocked to hear the news.

"We've opened ourselves up to this and there are really smart people out there that can hack into just about anything," said Erika Almond. "It's a risk absolutely and it is scary."

"It does make me think twice about what type of payment method I will be using," said Erin Gorgenson.  "It is scary and a huge hassle."

The hassle affects nearly 1,800 target stores nationwide.

Reports indicate that thieves hacked into Target's credit card processing program to steal personal information off the magnetic strips of customer's credit cards, which left millions of shoppers subject to the attack.

Target's CEO, Greg Steinhafel released a statement Thursday: "Target is working closely with law enforcement and financial institutions, and has identified and resolved the issue."

But customers remain weary.

"Holiday time is about giving and people sometimes struggle to make ends meet," said Gorgenson.  "It's just unforgivable."

The Minneapolis-based company said it immediately told authorities and financial institutions once it became aware of the breach and that it is teaming with a third-party forensics firm to investigate the matter.

Target Corp. said that customers who made purchases at its U.S. stores during the impacted period and suspected unauthorized activity should call them at 866-852-8680.
