(USA TODAY Sports) University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa will host the 2016 and 2017 College Football Playoff championship games, the playoff announced Monday.

BOWL SCHEDULE: Dates, times, TV

The pool of applicants for the 2016 game included University of Phoenix Stadium, EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla., the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The Orange and Cotton Bowls will host the 2016 semifinals.

The pool of applicants for the 2017 game included Raymond James Stadium, Levi's Stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area, EverBank Field, the Alamodome in San Antonio, and Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. The Chick-Fil-A and Fiesta Bowls will host the 2017 semifinals.

"It was a difficult decision for the management committee, because there were many good options, but Arizona and Tampa Bay were selected because of their top-notch facilities and because of the thorough proposals their leaders submitted. We were impressed by all the bids and we know communities' interest will only increase in the coming years," said Hancock.

"Arizona has proven itself to be one of the greatest settings for premiere college football events, and has become a favored destination for fans from around the country. The folks in Arizona put together an exceptional bid that really won the day with the management committee. Likewise, Tampa Bay is a terrific destination with a beautiful stadium and a community that is committed to hosting big events in a gracious and thorough manner. We are very happy with the facilities, the creative proposal and the commitment of support from community leaders," Hancock continued.

Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, is hosting the inaugural College Football Playoff championship in 2015, with the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl are hosting the inaugural playoff semifinals on Jan. 1, 2015.
