Winter Garden, Florida -- A cell phone doubled as a life-saving device during an armed robbery at a Winter Garden gas station early Monday morning.

Deputies say a man entered the Hess on W Colonial Drive around 4:45 a.m. and asked the clerk to help him locate a beverage.

Moments later, the man then pulled out a revolver and demanded the clerk open the safe. Police say the clerk could not open the safe and when a second clerk entered the store, the robber demanded again they open the safe. Again, they were unsuccessful.

As the robber left the store, he fired a single round hitting one of the clerks in his abdomen who only sustained minor injuries because the round hit his cell phone, stopping the bullet.
