St. Petersburg, Florida -- A father and his two sons are in the hospital tonight after they were rescued from their vehicle, which overturned in a canal during an accident.

Authorities say a chain reaction crash involving five vehicles happened on 77th Avenue North near Sawgrass Elementary School. A woman driving a gold car allegedly rear ended another vehicle, causing the chain reaction.

One of those vehicles was a private bus for an after school karate class with approximately a dozen kids on board. None of them were injured.

Another vehicle in the crash overturned onto its roof and was submerged underwater with a man and his two sons, ages 8 and 9, inside.

At least one bystander jumped into the water and helped rescue the children and the father, according to St. Petersburg police.

Authorities say the 8-year-old boy was unconscious and required CPR, but police say the child did start breathing on his own and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center along with his father and brother. At this point, authorities say none of them have life-threatening injuries.

The woman in the gold vehicle and four children were successfully extricated from the water and were also taken to the hospital. None appear to have any serious injuries.

Based on preliminary information, St. Petersburg police say the woman does appear to be at fault in the accident. Charges are pending.
