LAKELAND, Florida -- About 200 people attended a candlelight memorial Wednesday night for Rebecca Sedwick, the 12-year-old girl who took her own life earlier this week.

Polk County detectives say Rebecca left her home on Arizona Avenue in Lakeland around 6:45 a.m. Monday to walk to a bus stop for school. She never got on board.

Her body was later found at an old cement plant.

Rebecca's mother says her daughter was bullied at school, and that officials could have helped stop her daughter's pain but didn't. Rebecca's mother says she complained to Crystal Lake Middle School staff and filed a bullying report with the district.

A fundraiser is being held for Rebecca's family on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. It will be at Tadpoles on 115 E. Brandon Blvd. in Brandon. It's sponsored by the Brandon Cowboys Youth Cheerleading and Football programs.
