Clearwater, Florida -- Clearwater Fire and Rescue, the Coast Guard and Pinellas County Sheriff's eagle have temporarily suspended the search for a swimmer who went missing Monday afternoon.
Authorities say they searched the water under and around the Clearwater Pass (Sand Key) Bridge for 27-year-old James Poindexter of New Port Richey after his family saw him struggling nearly 40 yards from shore at Bayside Park. They told officials he called out for help and then could not be found.
Bayside Park was closed down for hours as crews set up their search. It was suspended shortly after sunset.
Clearwater Fire Department sent marine units out, two divers in the water, to locate Poindexter. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office and the Clearwater Police Department also have marine units at the scene.
An update from officials at 5:20 said crews have yet to find him.
