ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- It's a moment most parents expect to get to, but the Nugents could only pray for back it in April -- their daughter's third birthday party.
Ireland Nugent turns 3 years old on August 20, but her family threw her a party on Sunday at the Westlake Village Clubhouse.
Dozens of friends, family, and members of the community, many people the Nugents only met this year, showed up to wish Ireland a happy birthday and show their support.
"We couldn't have imagined this party back in April, and now seeing everyone here, it means the world to us," said Jerry Nugent, Ireland's father.
In April, Ireland's father backed over her legs while riding in his lawn mower by accident. She was rushed to the hospital. Later, her legs had to be taken off below the knee.
Her parents were so happy to throw her a third birthday party with everyone singing, dancing, and swimming.
"She doesn't know how big this is, and she doesn't understand, but we do," said Jerry.
Ireland's girlfriends dressed up as princesses, but Ireland refused to be a princess. She wanted to dress up as Spider-Man! Her father said that is her cousin's influence.
"Her cousin loves Spider-Man too!" said Jerry.
Ireland will have another surgery on Thursday to fix a bone in her leg that it not growing in the right direction. Jerry said it should be an outpatient surgery. We will keep you updated on her progress.
