ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- It hit hard and fast. Straight line winds along Gandy Boulevard ripped apart boat slips and awnings. The twisted metal hung precariously from power lines. Visitors at the Sahara Motel watched as all hell broke loose.
"All of a sudden the rain came in hard and I thought it was gonna break the windows. I closed them as quick as I could and then I saw the awning fly over the top of the buildings and get twisted in the powerlines," said one witness.

Duke Energy was out in force, dragging the metal off the road and cutting power to the lines as police stopped traffic. Further west on Gandy Blvd., several businesses' emergency calls, plunged into darkness after power lines snapped. Traffic screeched to a halt at 4th Street where cops blocked Gandy eastbound.
"I couldn't believe traffic was moving through here," said Jack Katz, "then the police stopped them."
Facebook and Twitter was also popping with posts, texts, and tweets about play at Tropicana Field being suspended as lights dimmed in the dome during the Rays/Diamondbacks game.
