Tampa, Florida -- A bay area surgeon is working to raise money to help families with babies born with cleft palates.

Reports show 1 in 700 babies in the U.S. are born with a cleft lip or palate. This can be repaired, but not all parents can afford all the costs that come before and after surgery.

Dr. Pat Ricalde from the Florida Craniofacial Institute stopped by with Michelle Lisan and her 2-year-old son Luke to explain the costs and treatments of children born with a cleft palate.

They are currently taking donations at the Florida Craniofacial Institute office on North Armenia Avenue in Tampa.

It's open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
