In 2009, the 10 News Investigators went undercover to help bust deceptive locksmiths

After our investigation, we sat down with Victor Crist, then a State Senator leading the effort to regulate the locksmith industry. But a statewide bill to crackdown on dirty locksmiths died in the legislature.

But Crist hadn't forgotten our story, or the locksmiths. Today County Commissioner Victor Crist, with the help of his fellow commissioners, moved to act. And they've got backup- professional locksmiths also want tougher regulation of these shady competitors.

Steven Wyman is the President of the West Coast Locksmith Association, and says there are thousands of complaints each month about fraudulent locksmiths.

If the ordinance passes, here's what it will do:

Locksmiths will be required to...

  • Obtain a license before becoming a locksmith
  • Provide a license number in all forms of advertising
  • Wear photo ID badges with license information
  • Register with the County's Consumer Protection Agency
