St. Petersburg, Florida -- A man was trapped after his minivan crashed into the back of a building at Calais Apartments Wednesday morning.

St. Pete Fire Rescue says it appears the 52-year-old male driver had a medical emergency that caused him to lose control of the Chrysler Town 'N Country minivan and crash through a 6-foot concrete block wall. The van came to a rest on its right side and was wedged between the wall and the apartment building.

Emergency workers were able to free the man by cutting and peeling back the van's roof. He was stabilized and brought to Bayfront Medical Center.

The two apartments affected suffered heavy damage and the person in the upstairs apartment, who was home at the time, was not injured.
