RUSKIN, Fla. (AP) - Fire officials in Hillsborough County say dry and windy conditions were high when a brush fire spread from five acres to nearly 30 acres, shutting down a major interstate in the area for hours.

A fire rescue statement says Saturday's fire spread very quickly and threatened nearby homes and properties in Ruskin. A mobile home, carnival trailer and some cars were damaged by the fire.

Crews for and Hillsborough County Fire put out the flames in a matter of hours.

The Florida Forestry Service will periodically check for hot spots over the next several days.

Authorities say the fire is contained but not full under control. Rescue crews are hitting all the hot spots to prevent the fire from spreading.

"Just with the way the wind was blowing it push a lot of smoke on 75," said Mike Dvorack, a spokesperson for the Florida Forest Service.

Interstate 75 near exit 240 was shut down for ten miles when the median caught on fire and smoke from the brush fire blanketed the road and reduced visibility.

The move left drivers stranded on the highway while the smoke cleared.

By 6 p.m., all lanes of the highway were back open to traffic.

No injuries were reported.
