SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA (CBSNews.com) - North Korea says it has ordered its strategic rocket and long-range artillery units to enter combat posture and target military bases on the U.S. mainland, Hawaii and Guam, the Reuters news agency reports.

Reuters says Tuesday's announcement came after, Pyongyang claimed, U.S. bombers flew more sorties threatening the North.

"From this moment, the Supreme Command of the Korean People's Army will be putting in combat duty posture No. 1 all field artillery units including long-range artillery units strategic rocket units that will target all enemy object in U.S. invasionary bases on its mainland, Hawaii and Guam," Reuters quotes the North's KCNA news agency as saying.

Pyongyang had already threatened a nuclear attack on the United States and South Korea, but it's not thought to have the technology to hit the U.S. mainland with an atomic weapon, Reuters points out.

After the North's announcement, China said it hopes all sides on the Korean peninsula can exercise restraint, Reuters reports, adding that Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the comments to reporters at a daily briefing.
