Gainesville, FL - The Florida Highway Patrol says Gainesville's mayor is facing DUI charges after troopers say they found him asleep behind the wheel.
According to FHP, a trooper was called out to a car crash shortly before 4 a.m. The trooper arrived on scene to find Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe asleep behind the wheel of his silver Honda Civic.
FHP says Lowe appeared to be intoxicated and his car was badly damaged. Lowe reportedly told authorities he fell asleep while driving, and that was cause of the crash.
Lowe eventually admitted to having three beers earlier in the night. A field sobriety test was given and he tested under the limit, but the arresting officer concluded that he was impaired at the time of the crash.
Mayor Lowe was arrested and charged with DUI and property damage.
He is currently facing a run-off election against Ed Braddy in April.
