Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Jeff Niemann.
The Denver Post is reporting that the Rays have talked about a possible trade with the Colorado Rockies for left-handed starting pitcher Christian Friedrich. The Rays would sent starting pitcher Jeff Niemann to Colorado in the deal. A former first round draft pick, Friedrich has not pitched yet this spring because of back and neck stiffness.
Niemann is a candidate for the Rays' final spot in the starting rotation and pitched well in Tampa Bay's spring opener against the Pirates, striking out two hitters in one inning of work.
Friedrich has been injured a lot in his career and spent much of 2012 in Tulsa with the Rockies' Double-A affiliate. He did pitch well in the majors at times, finishing the year with a 3-3 record with Colorado.
