CLEARWATER, Florida -- Smitty's restaurant in Clearwater has been around for decades, but has fallen on hard times recently.
"Gross, dirty, nasty, It was real bad. We quit eating there," said one former customer.
"It's got a nickname. It rhymes with Smitty's, and starts with an 'S'," said another.
That's the eatery's reputation, but now it's undergoing a big change.
Robert Irvine from Food Network's "Restaurant Impossible" is taking on Smitty's. Irvine and his crew gutted the restaurant and started from scratch, re-designing the interior, changing the menu, and revamping an abysmal kitchen.
"[It's] the dirtiest restaurant and kitchen I've ever come across in my entire career," said Irvine.
Fast forward a week to tonight night for the big unveiling, and a new era begins. When the doors open, there is a thunderous round of applause and great excitement.
"A lot of people don't realize that these are real people with real problems, and we give real solutions," Irvine said.
This "Restaurant Impossible" episode will air on the Food Network. No air date has been set yet, but you can see it sometime in April or May.
