Pasco County, Florida -- Tom Dobies' love for animals began one rainy July day 4 years ago. Lucy, a stray Lab mix, wandered up to his funeral home and into his heart.
Dobies added, "So it became a relationship."
Lucy became the funeral home's therapy dog.
"She would just come over and put her head on their knee, let people pet and love on her and it gave them a diversity to what they were here for."
Lucy passed away in August.
"She didn't go to sleep; she went over the rainbow bridge- that's where we'll see her some day," said Dobies as he choked back tears.
After the pain of losing Lucy, Dobies realized he had to do more and help other animals. One such project, Lucy's Bucket Brigade. It's a volunteer based campaign at Pasco Animal Shelter.
Dobies donated several hundred dollars for t-shirts to help bring awareness for the need of volunteers at the shelter. Dobies also gave thousands of dollars to the Pasco SPCA.
He hopes in the future, "Possibly a foundation for animals in need so they are cared for."
For Dobies', Lucy will forever be remembered in the community and thanks to Lucy, Dobies' life will forever be changed.
He added, "She was just part of me."
Coming up March 23, 2013, there will be a dog walk in Lucy's honor. It's the 1st Annual Pet Walk in Honor of Lucy Dobies. The walk will be held at Sims Park, downtown New Port Richey. Save the date.
