LARGO, Florida -- A Largo man was arrested for child abuse after police say he shook and slapped a baby, causing the child severe brain injuries.
Justin Thomas Arthur Friend had sole custody of the child on December 15 when the abuse took place, according to the arrest affidavit. Police say at some point he removed the baby from its crib and repeatedly shook the child and slapped the child's face.
The baby was taken to All Children's Hospital on December 22 after it was found unresponsive, according to police. A medical examination found the baby was suffering from bleeding on the brain, retinal hemorrhaging, and strained ligaments in the neck.
Friend was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on Wednesday on charges of child abuse, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, battery, tampering with a witness, and several unrelated traffic offenses.
