Pinellas Co. FL-- Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Deborah Clark has finally addressed the public regarding the robocalls that went out to voters on election day, which stated they had until "7 p.m. tomorrow" to vote.
As 10 News told you previously, the elections office says the robocalls were originally scheduled for Monday, November 5, but a computer glitch mistakenly delivered the call on November 6.
If voters believed that message, "tomorrow" would have been Wednesday, November 7, and their vote would not have been counted.
The message reached a portion of a list of 12,000 people, and while a second message was delivered to eliminate confusion, it is unclear which voters heard both messages.
Clark's statement is as follows:
On November 5, 2012 at 4:50 p.m. we used an automated dialing service to initiate a courtesy call to 38,702 Pinellas County voters to remind them that the election was tomorrow and to return their mail ballots by 7:00 p.m. Election Day. It was anticipated that the calls would be completed by 8:00 p.m. that day.
On November 6, 2012 at 8:34 a.m. we discovered that all of the calls were not completed on November 5, and the remaining calls had resumed at 8:00 a.m. In an effort to avoid any confusion to our voters we immediately stopped the calls and within 22 minutes of the discovery sent an updated message. 96% of the affected voters received the updated message within the hour, and 99% by 11:02am. Staff made repeated calls to the remaining 46 voters throughout the rest of the day; all but 16 voters were reached.
This was a voter outreach effort to encourage our voters to return their mail ballots by the legal deadline. We regret any inconvenience which may have resulted.
