Titusville, Florida (FL Today) -- The sister of a homeless Desert Storm veteran seriously injured and blinded in a brutal hammer attack last week in Titusville says the 52-year-old will have a long road to recovery.

David Gotshall was sleeping behind a business on the 3100 block of Garden Street on Aug. 17 when police said John Paul Angelillo, 33, struck him repeatedly in the head and face with a hammer.

Gotshall lost an eye in the attack and suffered broken bones, multiple skull fractures and injuries to his ribs, authorities report.

Family members have set up a "David Gotshall" account with Wells Fargo to raise funds for his ongoing medical care and recovery.

"David is really a good guy," said Gotshall's sister Danielle McDonald in an email.  "He just got down on his luck and lost his job, car and then home, which forced him to the streets."

Gotshall, was found battered and bloodied by two Brevard County sheriff's deputies who happened to be patrolling in the north Titusville area. The deputies made a U-turn into an adjacent parking lot and spotted Angelillo walking with a blood-covered hammer in his hand, reports show.

Deputies Ernest Cathy and Agent Mike Traylor then spotted Gotshall lying on the ground and curled in a fetal position, reports show.

The deputies immediately confronted Angelillo and took him into custody before calling for paramedics.

The Titusville Police Department, who said that Angelillo had gotten into a series of disagreements with Gotshall, charged Angelillo with attempted murder. Angelillo remains in the Brevard County Jail Complex and will have a Sept. 11 hearing on the charge.

Gotshall was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center. His condition was not immediately known.
