Stephanie Spurgeon received the maximum sentence of 15 years for the death of a one-year-old girl.

Largo, Florida -- A woman convicted of causing the death of a one-year-old girl on her first day of daycare has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars.

That's the maximum sentence for manslaughter, which a jury found Stephanie Spurgeon guilty of earlier this year.

In August 2008, Maria Harris' grandmother took the one-year-old to Spurgeon's house in Palm Harbor for her first day. After she was picked up, the baby started appearing lethargic, was unresponsive and vomiting at points, and died in a hospital a few days later. An autopsy showed she died from blunt trauma.

Emotion swept through the courtroom as the sentence was handed down. Harris' mother, grandmother, and grandfather exchanged hugs with prosecutors, tears in their eyes.

But there has also been a growing group who says Spurgeon, who had run the daycare for years, didn't cause the injuries that killed Harris. They've created a group called The Stephanie Foundation. Spurgeon's attorney says an appeal has already been filed.
