LONDON (AP) - Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor beat Italy in straight sets in the beach volleyball quarterfinals Sunday to remain on track for a third consecutive Olympic gold medal.
The U.S. pair beat Marta Menegatti and Greta Cicolari 21-13, 21-13. Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor will play in the semifinals against Beijing bronze medalists Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China, who beat Austria earlier Sunday.
The Chinese, who lost their first match in London, beat Austrian sisters Stefanie and Doris Schwaiger 21-18, 21-11.
In the other quarterfinals, the No. 2 U.S. women's team of Jennifer Kessy and April Ross also advanced to the semifinals Sunday night after a close 25-23, 21-18 win over the Czech Republic. Next up Kessy and Ross will go against the top-seeded Brazilian team of Juliana Silva and Larissa Franca.
The semifinal matches are scheduled for Tuesday.
