Bradenton, Florida -- A beloved Bay Area doctor's wife was found dead three years ago. Today, Delmer Smith goes on trial for the murder of Kathleen Briles.

Dr. James Briles came home in April of 2009 and found his wife on the floor of their living room, murdered. She had been beaten to death with an antique sewing machine.

Now he and other members of their family will sit in a Manatee County courtroom as the state goes after the death penalty for Delmer Smith.

Delmer Smith will already never leave prison. He was convicted of a different violent home invasion and got a life sentence.

He's suspected in several more violent attacks like this; two women were raped and two were killed.

Prosecutors want Smith executed for what they say he did to Kathleen Briles in Manatee County's Terra Ceia neighborhood.

To make their case, they'll use cell phone records that put Smith within a mile of the house.

They'll use physical evidence from the scene.

And they'll use unique items that deputies say Smith stole from the house and then pawned to make money, or -- in some cases -- kept for himself.

Jury selection will start this morning. With the variety of witnesses and evidence involved, a verdict may be a few weeks away.
