(CBS/AP) PARIS - The Paris premiere of "The Dark Night Rises" has been canceled after a guman killed 12 people early Friday morning in Colorado during a screening of the highly anticipated film.

Workers were pulling down the red carpet display in front of a movie theater on the French capital's famed Champs-Elysees after the Friday premiere was canceled. Some could be seen carrying away a large mask that had adorned the facade of the theater.

A man wearing a gas mask released an unknown gas into a crowded movie theater and opened fire early Friday in Aurora, a Denver suburb, leaving 12 people dead and dozens wounded. The shooter, a man in his 20s, has been arrested.

Nolan and actors Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway and Morgan Freeman are in Paris to promote the film, according to the Hollywood Reporter, but Warner Bros. canceled media interviews, as well as the premiere, after learning of the shooting.

The stars have not commented, Deadline reports, but the movie studio released a statement on Friday saying it was "deeply saddened" by the attack.

"Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident," the statement said. "We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."
