Before The Dark Knight Rises movie hit theaters, it was already creating controversy and threats, especially online. A negative review had even led to death threats for one critic.

Enthusiastic crowds -- with plenty of wannabe caped crusaders in costume -- lined up for midnight showings and big premieres as far away as London.

But a dark hostility has been gathering around The Dark Knight Rises for days.

When the first negative write-up by a critic popped up on the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, angry fans responded -- shutting down that critic's website with torrents of abuse, including death threats.

Rotten Tomatoes' boss disabled comments for the first time in his site's history. He posted a statement saying he was considering ending anonymous commenting for good.

The movie's director, Christopher Nolan, said he understands the fans' devotion -- at least the positive parts.

"My job is to be obsessive about the subject and all I've been thinking about for the last two years that we've been making this is Batman. So, I can kind of relate, actually," Nolan said at the London premiere Wednesday.

The movie's villain got blood pumping this week in the political world.

Rush Limbaugh made a connection that got a lot of attention. "The villain in The Dark Knight Rises is named Bane, B-a-n-e," Limbaugh said on his radio show.

"What is the name of the venture capital firm that Romney ran and around which there's now this make-believe controversy? Bain.

"Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bane?"

Bane was introduced in the comic books in 1993, and was picked to be the bad guy in this movie a year and a half ago.

But another villain is certainly worth mentioning as an icon of rampant, random violence.

In the previous Dark Knight movie, the villain -- the Joker -- made it his life's work to create chaos through senseless violence and turn the world upside down.
