Tampa, Florida -- When you think of a city that's "big time," what does it have? Sports? Museums? The performing arts? Well, 25 years ago today, Tampa Bay got a lot more "big time."
What's now the Straz Center opened its doors in Downtown Tampa on July 12, 1987.
Before 1987, Tampa had no major place for Broadway shows, concerts, or orchestras.
But the new complex gave our area one of the largest venues like it in the Southeastern U.S.
It was originally called the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.
But in 2009, it was renamed the Straz Center for the Performing Arts after David A. Straz, Jr. donated the largest individual gift ever given to a cultural institution in Tampa Bay.
