St. Petersburg, Florida -- A wild chase with police ended in St. Petersburg with a robbery suspect with a gunshot to the leg.

It started at the Scorpion Tobacco Shop on 34th street.

Police say they were called about two men robbing the store at gunpoint.

Turns out, the robbers were actually 15 and 16-year-old teenagers.  All three have previous arrests, according to police.

As officers approached the store, they spotted the teens running out the back door, jumping into a car belonging to one of the store clerks.

They smashed into another vehicle as they fled the scene, trying to get away from police.

Cops chased the car for nine blocks down 34th Street when one of the suspects pointed a gun at the police who were pursuing them.

Police say one of the officers fired his department issued handgun at the suspects' car.

At this point in the chase, police say the suspects' car then swerved some for some unknown reason and hit a parked police cruiser that was responding to help.

The suspects' vehicle then came to a stop and police converged on the vehicle, taking three people into custody.

In the moments before the suspects were arrested, the officer who fired his gun during the pursuit fired several more shots, hitting one of the suspects in the leg, according to police.

That suspect suffered a non life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, and all three were taken to jail.

There will not only be a criminal investigation in this case because of the armed robbery and hit and run, but an Internal Affairs investigation to determine whether the officer was justified in firing at the suspects.

The police chief will also convene a Shooting Review Board to look into the shooting.
