PLANT CITY, Fla. -- The pilot of a single-seat Challenger aircraft is dead after crashing at Blackwater Creek Airport in Plant City, Fla. Saturday morning.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, 79-year-old William Phillips of Lakeland attempted to land his plane three times before the accident.
On the last attempt, deputies say Phillips landed hard on the belly of the fuselage. The plane then skidded approximately 50 yards and stopped on the grass runway.
Paramedics responding to the scene found Phillips dead inside the plane, still strapped into his seat.
The crash is still under investigation.
