Tampa, Florida -- Police say a 9-year-old girl did the right thingFriday afternoon when a stranger grabbed her by the wrist and she screamed, pulled away and ran.

The incident happened outside the home of the girl's grandparents, located at 8321 Albany Avenue North. Police say the girl was getting a toy in her grandparents' front yard when the attempted abduction occurred.

"She felt someone grab her arm and asked her to take her to a specific location. She obviously screamed, she pulled her arm away and ran inside to her home and told her mom," said Tampa Police Spokesperson Andrea Davis.

The girl later told detectives she had never seen the man before.

"We do believe that he intended to abduct her and who knows what was going to happen."

Police say the girl was not injured and say she's described the suspect as a white male, 20-to-30-years-old, approximately 5'9" to 5'11" with blue eyes, short brown hair and light facial hair.

The girl told police the man had an earring in his right ear and a class ring with a green gem in it. She said he was also wearing a white tank top with black basketball shorts that have red and white stripes on the sides.

"In this particular case, she did everything right. The fact that she screamed and pulled away and ran is exactly the right thing to do," Davis said while praising the girl's actions.

The incident has bothered several parents in the area who now say they'll be more caution with their kids.

"Of course I'm not going to let them play by themselves now, somebody has to be near to watch them now," said Princess Samonte, the mother of two young boys.

Meanwhile as police continue searching for the suspect, they're checking with area businesses to see if anyone has any surveillance video that might show a good picture of the man.
