ATLANTA (WXIA) -- Fox News host Geraldo Rivera's tweet about Florida teen shooting victim Trayvon Martin has made many upset in the Twitterverse.

As thousands gathered in Sanford, Florida Thursday to protest the shooting death of 17-year-old Martin at the hands of 28-year-old self-styled neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, Rivera tweeted, "His hoodie killed Trayvon Martin as surely as George Zimmerman."

Rivera's tweet echoed a column he wrote for the Fox News Latino website Friday.

Responses were quick and pointed.

One poster, @mrkallman, tweeted, "@GeraldoRivera Fashion killed Trayvon Martin? You are sick."

CNN contributor and heavy Twitter user Roland Martin said over the course of several tweets, "Hey Geraldo, Black kids have gotten shot not wearing hoodies. Dude, that's just dumb; So @GeraldoRivera, is a woman in 6-inch heels, a short skirt and a low-cut blouse responsible for her own rape? That's a serious question."

Another poster, @EminemsRevenge, tweeted, "@GeraldoRivera That's the most IGNORANT #cracker thing you've ever said.. in that case, why hasn't #hoddie wearer #BillBelichick been killed?"

Bill Belichick, head coach of the NFL's New England Patriots regularly wears a hoodie on the sidelines during Patriots games.

In the column, Rivera said that any child of color with a hoodie pulled over his head creates a "certain reaction."

"No one black, brown or white can honestly tell me that seeing a kid of color with a hood pulled over his head doesn't generate a certain reaction, sometimes scorn, often menace," Rivera said in the column.

Interviewed by Politico on Friday, Rivera said he wouldn't go back on any of what he said in the column or in the tweet, despite the high amount of criticism he was receiving.
