Tallahassee, Florida -- A letter signed by 17 lawyers questions the nomination of a politically connected Miami attorney for the state Supreme Court.

Signers include former Florida Bar President Kelly Overstreet-Johnson and state Sen. Alex Villalobos, R-Miami.

The letter sent Monday to Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission chairman Robert Hackleman says the panel may have run afoul of the state constitution by bowing to Gov. Charlie Crist's request to reopen the process.

Crist asked for more diversity after he eliminated the only Hispanic among five nominees by naming him to an appeal court.

The panel then added Frank Jimenez, who once worked for former Gov. Jeb Bush and now is the Navy's general counsel.
