MARNE, Mich. (WZZM) -- At first, a farmer in Michigan says he thought a
her of deer or even a flock of ostriches were grazing in his wheat field on Tuesday
afternoon. But upon closer inspection, it turns out the big birds were
actually sandhill cranes.
An Ottawa County Animal Control officer told the property owner the
flock of about 20 large birds probably flew in from the Dakotas. They
are looking for a place to spend the summer where there is abundant food
There are actually many sandhill cranes in southwest lower Michigan. Every year there is a Sandhill Crane and Art Festival in Calhoun County near Battle Creek.
