INDIAN SHORES, Florida (AP) - A sanctuary that is known for being a haven for sick and injured birds since 1971 can no longer afford to take in new birds.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary isn't ruling out a turn in the financial situation that would allow them to again accept sick birds. But a board member says it would take a miracle to get the local institution back on its feet.

The operations manager for the sanctuary told the newspaper that the organization will focus on the care and completion of the rehabilitation process for the birds that are currently on the property.

The facility will do its best for any birds dropped off at the site but would no longer actively rescue them.
