Melbourne, FL (Florida Today) -- Brevard County health officials say a bat found in Melbourne tested positive for rabies on Tuesday.
Brevard County Health Department Director Dr. Heidar Heshmati said the bat was found on Bristol Lane.
"We advise everyone in the area who has been exposed to any tray animals or even if their own pet has been exposed to call Animal Services and Enforcement," Heshmati said in a press release.
Rabies can be deadly to humans, he said. He asked that people report strange-behaving animals, avoid direct contact with wild animals and have their cats and dogs immunized against rabies.
Animal Services can be reached at 321-633-2024. Questions regarding rabies should be directed to the health department at 321-454-7111.
