St. Petersburg, Florida - Recreational use of marijuana became legal in Colorado on January 1st.
Washington state legalized it as well, and there are signs other states are inching that way. But people at Fox News are concerned about the spread of legalized pot. On the network's morning show "Fox and Friends," co-host Brian Kilmeade outlined a potential problem:
"Can people collecting food stamps in Colorado add marijuana to their shopping list? Right now the answer is yes, because there's nothing blocking government benefit cards from working in pot shop ATMs."
Kilmeade says people can swipe their food stamp cards for cash, then turn around a buy pot. PunditFact found out that isn't true.
"Food stamps can only be used on food and you can never take food stamps out for cash," says Aaron Sharockman, editor at PunditFact Florida.
And for that, PunditFact rates Kilmeade's statement, FALSE.
Next, let's flip over to Headline News and the always outspoken Nancy Grace explaining why she's against the use of marijuana.
"People on pot that shoot each other, that stab each other, strangle each other, drive under the influence, kill families... wipe out a whole family."
"We talked to a lot of psychologists, we talked to criminologists, we looked at the crime stats and we found there is a relationship between people who commit crimes and people who smoke marijuana. But we couldn't figure out that because that person smoked marijuana they committed this crime," says Sharockman, who adds there may be isolated cases, but there's no broad indication marijuana makes people more violent.
PunditFact rates Nancy Grace's statement, MOSTLY FALSE.
You can bet PunditFact will be checking out the claims from both sides of the marijuana debate as the issue moves across the country.
