Bartow, Florida - The Florida Department of Health announces that temporary payment has been authorized for Medicaid recipients who are pregnant, age 21 and older, and would like to get a flu shot.

According to the DOH, it is especially important for pregnant women to be vaccinated. Several reports have surfaced of pregnant women with inluenza-like symptoms in the state, and there is increased risk of complications associated with contracting the illness while with child.

Officials say the flu vaccination is safe and will protect against the flu for mothers, unborn babies, and newborns during the first months after birth.

Medicaid reimbursement is temporarily authorized for CPT code 90686, and is the same rate for those vaccines that are currently covered for Medicaid recipients between the ages of 18-20.

This temporary reimbursement went into effect on December 19, 2013, and will remain so through March 31, 2014.

"The flu vaccine is the single best way to prevent flu and it is very important for pregnant women to receive the influenza vaccination," said Dr. Ulyee Choe, FDOH-Polk Director. "We want to make sure that people are aware of this new opportunity for pregnant women to receive flu vaccination through Medicaid reimbursement."

The Department of Health in Polk County recommends that all individuals six months of age and older receive the flu vaccination each year.

Additional flu prevention steps include washing your hands often, keeping your hands away from your face, and covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing and coughing. Symptoms of the flu include headache, fever, severe cough, runny nose, or body aches.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, health officials advise you to see your primary care provider immediately.
