BRADENTON, Florida - A 4-year-old boy was shot in the head while he was inside his bedroom Saturday morning.
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 11:20 a.m. at 2603 36th Avenue West in South Bradenton. Sheriff Brad Stuebe says someone drove past the child's home and fired several shots at the front of the house. One of the bullets hit the child.
"I go out and I see lights and I see the fire trucks and everything, and then I just kept away from everything. I saw the helicopter flying around," said neighbor Lindel Maddox.
Maddox, who has lived in the neighborhood for 20 years, says he heard at least three gunshots.
Sheriff Stuebe says the boy lives in the home with his mother, but she was not hurt. He says the violence was not a random act and has all the signs of a drive-by shooting.
The boy was airlifted to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg where he remains tonight.
He would not say if the shooting was drug or gang related, but he says they do think the house was targeted.
