Tampa, FL -- The driver of a semi that ended up with its wheels hanging over the edge of the Selmon Expressway says he thought he was going to die in Tuesday's accident.

Mark Pickard tells 10 News that as his truck was sliding along the outside concrete barrier of the Expressway with his vehicle's passenger side wheels hanging over the edge, "I thought that was it."

The Seffner man says he lost control of his semi after he blew out a tire, but the Florida Highway Patrol still cited the 45-year-old with Careless Driving.

The single-vehicle accident just past the downtown Kennedy exit closed the westbound lanes of the Expressway during morning rush hour, backing up traffic for miles.

"I thought I was going over and I turned it as hard as I could to the left," Pickard recalled.

Officials say the semi traveled about 600 feet along the outside barrier, taking out three light poles before it came to a stop.

Pickard suffered only minor injures.
